CHESTERFIELD MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL TO
RECOGNIZE THE 2019 CHESTERFIELD CITIZEN OF THE YEAR

Now, more than ever, our communities need individuals to volunteer and support others. Chesterfield Citizen of the Year recipients are recognized for their contributions to the City of Chesterfield through volunteerism, community projects and overall participation in civic groups. On Monday, September 20, 2021 the Chesterfield Mayor and City Council will recognize Mark Leach as the 2019 Chesterfield Citizen of the Year at the City Council meeting scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Community Supporters, family and friends are encouraged to attend, sharing in the recognition of Mark Leach’s outstanding achievements. A reception is planned following the City’s presentation of the award to Mr. Leach. The Citizen of the Year Selection Committee, itself made up of several outstanding citizen volunteers, presented their recommendation to the Mayor and City Council following their review of several worthy nominations.

On September 20, 2021, Mayor Bob Nation and City Council will honor Mark Leach. Mr. Leach is a long-time resident of Chesterfield and has made an immeasurable impact on the City of Chesterfield, passionately advocating for the good of our City and his residents.

Mr. Leach’s life in Chesterfield includes serving as a Cub-Scout den and pack leader, as well as a neighborhood trustee. He is a founding member of the “Chesterfield Landmarks Preservation Commission” and continued to serve as a member of the “Chesterfield Landmarks Historic and Preservation Commission” until 2019. Mr. Leach has conducted a comprehensive prehistoric Native American survey, and authored his book, “A Guide to Chesterfield’s Ancient History”, with all profits benefiting the Landmarks Preservation Commission.

While serving on the Heritage Foundation of Chesterfield, he conducted an inventory of Native American artifacts on loan to the City, as part of the exhibits outside the Council Chambers. He also conducted an inventory of artifacts gifted to the City and created the Chesterfield’s Ancient Past exhibit featuring many of these artifacts at the Chesterfield Heritage Museum at Chesterfield Mall.

As a long-standing trustee of the Missouri Archaeological Society, Mark engages in a wide variety of activities related to the preservation, restoration, and public outreach of Chesterfield’s ancient past. He has written numerous articles, books, and local PBS documentaries on the topic and has spoken to thousands via Media and school appearances.

For 15 years, Mark has served as the Coordinator of Chesterfield’s Blake Mound and Cave site, where he has spearheaded the restoration of 100 years of grave robbing damage and promotes ongoing professional archaeological research. Mr. Leach also serves as the Coordinator of the Chesterfield Valley Archaeology Network, where he encourages and coordinates professional archaeological research throughout the greater Chesterfield Valley.

Currently, Mr. Leach is working with the Great Rivers Greenway organization on a proposed Cahokia Mounds Trail along for Cahokian mounds near Parkway Central. He is also working with nearby municipal historic commissions and business organizations that share the Chesterfield Valley on promoting the Valley as an Archaeology research and travel destination.

A reception in the Multi-Purpose Room at City Hall will follow the presentation at the City Council meeting.
