In accordance with the tradition of the American Public Works Association, those who work in professions that provide and maintain public facilities and services will be honored during National Public Works Week, May 21-27, 2017. This year’s theme – Public Works Connects Us – celebrates the vital role public works plays in connecting us all together. As the cornerstone of civilization, public works provides, maintains, and improves the structures and services that assure a higher quality of life for our communities. Its streets, roads, bridges, and public transportation keep us linked together from coast to coast, and its clean water and sanitation services keep us healthy and allow our communities to grow and prosper.

Public Works professional are not limited to municipal employees but include all those who manage water, sewer, public transportation, and refuse removal systems, as well as those responsible for maintaining public building, and grounds. Collaboration between public entities, private companies, utilities, fire and levee districts, and first responders is critical to maintain and improve the systems and services vital to a community’s health, safety and comfort.

“We value our communities and the role Public Works professionals play in keeping them safe and functioning smoothly,” reports the American Public Works Association, sponsor of National Public Works Week. “Our objective is designed to increase public awareness of their contributions as well as to enlighten the public about the duties, practices and goals of Public Works professionals.”
