Jane Durrell Named 2013 Citizen of the Year

At the March 17, 2014 City Council Meeting, Mayor Bob Nation announced that Jane Durrell was chosen as the 2013 Chesterfield Citizen of the Year.  Mrs. Durrell attended with many of her friends and family to share in the celebration and expressed her appreciation in receiving the award. Citizens of the Year are recognized for their benefit to the City of Chesterfield through volunteerism, working on community projects, and overall civic contributions to the community.  A Citizens Selection Committee comprised of citizen committee and community volunteers presented their recommendation to the City Council following their review of several nominations.

Jane Durrell has been a resident of Chesterfield for over 45 years and served as a City Councilmember representing the residents of Ward I from April 19, 1999 through June 2, 2008, serving as President Pro Tem one year.  During those years she served on the Planning and Public Works Committee and the Finance and Administration Committee of Council, where she served as Chairperson of that committee for three years.

Jane Durrell has been a champion in preserving the history of Chesterfield by serving on the Chesterfield Historical and Landmarks Preservation Commission from 1990 to 1999, and again from 2008 to the present serving as Chairperson for three of those years.  While serving in this role, she worked to save the historic Farmer's Bank Building at the corner of Baxter and Old Chesterfield Road when the Baxter Road extension was constructed.  She was also the editor and wrote two chapters of the historical book, “Chesterfield: From Untamed Wilderness to Thriving Municipality.”

Lynne Johnson, stated in her nomination of Jane that, “She is an energizing force in the Chesterfield Historic and Landmarks Preservation Committee, always volunteering to take on and complete responsibilities that others do not. She is a source of information on both the Chesterfield of today and of old, and enthusiastically inspires all of us.”
