CHESTERFIELD CITY COUNCIL TO RECOGNIZE THE 2016 CITIZEN OF THE YEAR

The Chesterfield Mayor and City Council will recognize Lee G. Wall and his daughter Jan Misuraca as the 2016 Citizens of the Year at the March 20 City Council meeting at 7 p.m. Supporters are encouraged to attend to share in the recognition of these community leaders and participate in a reception following the meeting. Citizen of the Year recipients are recognized for their benefit to the City of Chesterfield through volunteerism, working on community projects, and overall civic contributions to the community. A Citizens Selection Committee comprised of citizen committee and community volunteers presented their recommendation to the City Council following their review of several nominations.

Mr. Wall and Mrs. Misuraca were nominated by Bruce Geiger and Nancy Sansone for their invaluable involvement in the creation of the Veterans Honor Park located within Central Park. In August 2012, Jan and her father Lee, a World War II veteran, came forward with a unique proposal. Their concept was to create a welcoming space that would honor, not just memorialize, our veterans, both past and future. Their vision was to inspire young people about the military, as well as educate those of all ages about the rich history the military has played in the evolution of our country.

Following numerous meetings with staff and the design firm to move the project ahead, the City Council approved the design concept and agreed to a matching contribution up to $500,000. With that, Jan, Lee and team members launched an aggressive fund raising effort. Over the next two years, Jan and her father took the lead in this endeavor. They met with over 70 companies and over 60 organizations such as the Chambers of Commerce, veterans groups, and unions, as well as many individuals. Jan, along with a few fellow grads, established the Parkway Alumni Association and is a long time resident of Chesterfield.

As of today, the fundraising effort has raised nearly $550,000 and continues to grow. Nearly 250 separate contributions have been received. While the vast majority are local, contributions have been received from all over the country. In addition, Jan and Lee were instrumental in assisting the City in writing a Municipal Parks grant. The grant, in the amount of $525,000 was approved.

A ground breaking ceremony was held on June 1, 2016, with over 200 citizens, including many veterans, in attendance and a dedication ceremony is planned for May 3.
“I am extremely pleased and proud to announce that Jan Misuraca and her father Lee Wall have been selected as Citizens of the Year for Chesterfield,” stated Mayor Bob Nation. “Their unparalleled work in fundraising and promotion of the Veterans Honor Park is truly commendable.”

A reception in the Multi-Purpose Room at City Hall will follow the presentation at the City Council meeting.
